Cooling Technology for PPE

How The Latest PPE Cooling Technology Can Help Its Wearers

Cooling technology for PPE has been around for ages. The very same cooling technology for PPE has been the subject of research for many scientists. It is no myth that wearing PPE does make the wearer feel uncomfortable and hot. To reduce some of that heat, researchers and scientists are trying to find ways to reduce it. That is why they came up with cooling technology for PPE.

Scientists and researchers have come up with various ways to help wearers feel less heaty and more comfortable while at work. For many years, these researchers and scientists have come up with creative ways and ideas to help alleviate the heat. In this article, we will talk about cooling technology in PPE and what has been done.

Heat Risks In PPE Items

One of the common problems faced by PPE wearers is a heat-related illness. Heat-related illnesses are usually caused by working in high temperatures, high humidity or direct sun for a long period of time.

A lot of outdoor workers suffer from heat-related illnesses every year. On top of that, many workers die from heat-induced illnesses from PPE each year. In just 2010 alone, 30 workers who wear PPE died from heatstroke.

In heaty environments, the body releases excess heat to maintain a stable internal temperature. The human body does so by circulating blood to the skin and through sweating. If your body cannot get rid of the excess heat, it will store it. Furthermore, your body’s core temperature rises and the heart rate increases.

When your body continues to store heat, you will begin to lose concentration and have problems focusing on a task. You may even become irritable or sick, and may often loses the desire to drink water. It can then follow by fainting and even death. Those can happen if the person does not cool down fast enough (OSHA Fact Sheet).

Heat stress can lead to many different conditions. It can include, but not limited to:

  • Heat stroke
  • Or heat exhaustion
  • Heat syncope
  • Or heat cramps
  • Heat rash

Prevention of heat stress in your employees and ground workers is definitely important (CDC Heat Stress).

How Heat Risks in PPE Are Reduced

How Heat Risks in PPE Are Reduced tkr engineering

There are quite a few ways PPE heat can be reduced. For example, cooling vests can provide a cool layer close to the skin that readily absorbs body heat. It helps keep the wearer’s body temperatures within a safe range. Lower body temperatures can lead to less water and electrolyte loss via sweating. Generally, cooling vests can preserve safe body temperatures, which helps decreases the risk of heat illness.

Back in 1988, the NAVY carried out a study of cooling vests including one that uses frozen gel packs. This particular vest was tested through several channels that include:

  • Rectal and skin temperature
  • Heart rate
  • Oxygen uptake
  • Sweat rate

During the employees’ work activities in hot environments, the vest showed people how it is kept all parameters at statistically significant lower thresholds than the usual controls. However, the vests only preserved their veracity for about two hours before having to replace the gel packs with new frozen ones (Pimental, 1992).

Other Related Researches

Another more recent research study completed in 2008 tested the effects of multiple personal cooling equipment devices. It was carried out on the alleviation of heat strain in high-temperature work areas. There were up to at least 8 testing conditions:

  • The control (wearing no cooling products)
  • Neck cooling scarf “A”
  • Neck cooling scarf “B”
  • Frozen gel-pack brimmed hat
  • Cooling vest
  • Various combinations of these items

Results showed that the rectal temperature was efficiently maintained. At the same time, overall skin temperature and heart rate become more stable when participants wear this personal cooling equipment. The researchers came to the conclusion that the combination of the cooling vest, a cooling scarf, and the brimmed gel-pack cooling hat showed a substantial amount of heat stress elimination. It comes up to a total cooling area of 4.2% of the body surface area as compared to only 3.3% when just a vest was worn (Choi, 2008).

More Research Pertaining to PPE Cooling Technologies

A more recent study shows that cooling collars alone can actually increase the risk. Researchers verified the hypothesis that cooling the neck region can greatly improve exercise ability while working in hot environments. Athletes who also have participated in this very same study completed four running tests inside an environmental chamber.

The same athlete participants wore a cooling-gel collar in the first round of tests. However, not in the second round though. Time to exhaustion, heart rate, rectal temperature, neck skin temperature, rating of perceived exertion, and thermal sensation were used to carry out the measurement. The researchers came to a final decision that the participants who wore the cooling-gel collars are able to exercise 13.5% longer on average before reaching their maximum level of exhaustion. This is due to the cooling collars dampened the perceived levels of thermal strain.

Despite these observations of relief, their extended effort did not reduce rectal temperatures or heart rates. It may potentially increase the risk of heat-related illness (Tyler, 2011).

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Center for Disease Control (CDC), other similar safety government agencies, industry and employee groups agree that working in environments with high temperature and humidity is can be hazardous.  As a result, there have been rules and regulations to lessen and decrease this risk. NIOSH has further stated that management should:

Provide auxiliary body cooling vests or suits for cleaning the sniff (vent), maintenance work, or any other activity that occurs in high heat exposure areas.

What Manufacturers Have To Say

What Manufacturers Have To Say tkr engineering

Manufacturers further state that cooling vests:

Maintains a comfortable temperature even in the most extreme heated environment (by) absorbing heat generated by the wearer.

On top of that, manufacturers claim that cooling vests also offer great relief for all of the clear symptoms of heat stress.

Safety and health experts believe that workers will be less prone to developing heat illness if they use cooling vests while working in hot and humid environment. The manufacturer, RPCM, states that its cool vests will endure thermally stable at 59 °F (15 °C) for hours to help keep body temperature at normal levels. TuffRhino’s evaporative cooling vests help remove body heat for (on average) 5 hours to 10 hours depending on the humidity in the atmosphere.

All MiraCool products use permeable crystals to retain water. Using evaporative cooling methods for up to 2 days before re-soaking the products is suggested.

The bottom line is that PPE manufacturers understand very well that it can generate heat easily. These heats are generally generated via body heat of the wearer. Having said that, there are researchers and scientists have come up with ways to reduce the heat generated and trapped in the wearer’s PPE gears. These researchers and manufacturers have worked together to create PPE that helps with heat reduction, which can further reduce the heat trapped.

3 Common Responsibilities of Marine Engineers

4 Creative Ways TKR Engineering Tackles Workplace Safety

3 Common Responsibilities of Marine Engineers

Maritime Engineers’ Tasks Vary Between Ranks

There are quite a number of marine engineering responsibilities a marine engineer has to see to. As a branch of engineering, marine engineers will see that their responsibilities are as stressful as the other engineering branches.

Marine engineers’ regular tasks usually encompass anything marine and offshore. Therefore, it is normal for marine engineers to be based on offshore rigs and marine vessels. It is also normal to hear about how stressful it is for marine engineers on their jobs. Especially when they have to be based offshore for months around. Having said that, being a marine engineer requires the individual to be mentally and emotionally steady.

Main Responsibilities of Marine Engineers

The common responsibilities of marine engineers are many. Monitoring and maintenance of mechanical systems is one of those main responsibilities. Engineers of varying ranks on board ship is allocated precise machinery and systems for maintenance and monitoring purposes.

Machinery systems are allocated among all engineers. It is the duty of each engineer to make sure that their machinery is running properly at all times. Marine engineers are also needed to look after the machinery on deck.

Here are 3 main responsibilities of a marine engineer.

1. Proper record-keeping and planning maintenance

Proper record-keeping and planning maintenance

The engine room department functions as a team to make sure of the maintenance of all machinery systems is carried out. It has to follow accordingly to the planned maintenance system. Precise and accurate record-keeping of different parameters is carried out for official paperwork and reporting purposes.

2. Fuel oil bunkering

Marine engineers are also responsible for the transfer of fuel oil to the ship from a bunker station or barge. It is typically the duty of the 4th engineer who also takes regular soundings of the fuel oil tanks. The very same engineer will also have to report it to the chief engineer for planning bunkering procedures.

3. Emergency breakdown and repair

Emergency breakdown and repair

Marine engineering also teaches the individual how to handle main maintenance and breakdown of machinery systems. This is especially important as these marine engineers will have to handle all of these while at sea. Although marine engineers are expected to be capable of the same, there are times when there may be a need for experts. In such scenarios, marine engineers are needed and advised to work with the experts to repair and resolve the issue.

On top of the above-mentioned duties, a marine engineer on ships is needed to follow all the instructions of the chief engineer. They will also have to listen to the head of the engine room department while they are still on board.

What is the workplace of a Marine Engineer like?

A good lot of a marine engineer’s responsibilities can be performed in their office. However, there are times when sea trials are part of their job responsibilities. Marine engineers may have to spend time aboard a ship to test how the vessel is performing. They will also have to gather information for maintenance. Sometimes, they may have to gather information for an upcoming retrofit.

Marine engineers who concentrate on offshore drilling will often find themselves spending time on the oil rig. When they are there, they will have to oversee and manage maintenance. They may even have to oversee repair efforts involving the rig’s mechanical systems due to their marine engineering responsibilities.

Different Marine Engineer Ranks

Different Marine Engineer Ranks

There are several marine engineering ranks within the industry. Each of them holds different responsibilities. Here are some of the examples.

a. Chief marine engineer

The chief engineer of the ship is the leader of the technical department of the ship. It is his responsibility to ensure that the engine room machinery functions properly for a smooth voyage. According to the Safety of life at sea (SOLAS) convention (international maritime laws for maritime safety), it is the responsibility of the chief engineer to take care of the safety of maritime professionals working in the engine room.

In the maritime law, it says that the operation of the ship and its equipment should be properly taken care of by the chief engineer. It should satisfy all minimum standards of safety.

There are several duties of the chief maritime engineer. It applies in both emergency and general conditions.

  • The chief maritime engineer should make sure that all the ship’s machinery and equipment are functioning in an efficient manner in order to support safe navigation of the ship.
  • Regular inspections of equipment dealing with ship and personal safety must be carried out by the same chief officer at consistent intervals
  • All items used for pollution prevention has to be frequently checked and tried out for proper working conditions
  • Chief engineer should put down a set of standing orders for each crew member under his overview

Above are some of the common responsibilities of a chief marine engineer.

b. 2nd Engineer

The 2nd engineer offers supreme assistance to the Chief engineer for running the ship efficiently. On top of that, second engineer is also responsible for all the operational engineers and the crew in the engine room. He makes sure and overlooks their personnel safety and routine duties. He also plans the overall maintenance of all the machinery that are located in the engine room of the ship.

Here are some of the common responsibilities of the 2nd marine engineer.

  • Safety of Personnel: Second engineer is in charge of risk assessment, briefing and safety training of the entire engine crew. He will have to pay extra attention especially for the junior engineers and new crew. All the emergency machinery and equipment underSOLAS are also under the overview of the second engineer.
  • Engine Room Management Responsibility: He is the go-to person for managing the engine room staff. At the same time, he has to carry out duties of the engine room. As the assistant to the chief engineer, he will directly report to the chief engineer. He will also become the PIC of the engine room on his absence.
  • Operation and Maintenance of Machinery: The second engineer is also responsible for the maintenance of all the engine room and deck machinery. He also has to overlook all the machineries and safety systems are working safely. The 2nd engineer just has to efficiently take care of it within the provided parameters.

c. Third Engineer

The third marine engineer’s role is quite similar to the second assistant engineer. His role depends on what the 2nd marine engineer does. However, his role is usually in charge of boilers, fuel, auxiliary engines, condensate and feed systems. People can consider him as the third most senior engine officer on board.

At times he may be responsible for fuelling (bunkering). If so, he may hold a valid PIC endorsement for fuel transfer operations. Once again, his precise duties will usually depend upon the type of ship and arrangement of the engine department.

The above ranks are just some of the common ranks of marine engineers on board a vessel. The marine engineering responsibilities (and pay bands) cascades as the seniority of the rank goes.

The bottom line is that the responsibilities of a marine engineer responsibilities is wide and varying. Their main responsibility is to the vessel and its crew members. They ensure that the vessel is in smooth operation and that the crew’s welfare is well taken cared of.

4 Ways How Marine Engineering Can Benefit You

Here Are 4 Creative Ways That TKR Engineering Handle Workplace Safety

4 Reasons How Engineering Management is Beneficial

4 Ways We Handle Workplace Safety

Safety Where You Work Is Imperative After All

Workplace safety is something that TKR Engineering holds in very high regard. As we often deal with high levels of hazards and similar risks, it is only normal that we have to be ready. At all times. And for a good cause too.

As we have stressed workplace safety more often than not, here are some ways that we handle workplace safety. We made it amusing while taking it seriously.

1. Periodical fire drill practice

Fire breakouts are some of the most common workplace risks. For that very reason, we ensure that our staffs are trained and updated periodically on what to do. Just in case a fire breaks out, our staffs are trained on how to use the fire extinguisher and the fire hose.

Training and practices are done regularly on a monthly basis. Selected staffs are asked to attend for an updated practice.

While training for it, our staffs are also educated on the different kinds of “fire hazards”. They were educated on a variety of fire-related hazards while at it. At the same time, they are also taught what kinds of anti-inflammatory items to use. We made sure that just in case a fire breaks out, our staffs are well-prepared for it.

2. Slip, trip, and fall awareness

The slip, trip, and fall awareness occasion are to guide and train our staffs about the “dangers” of slipperiness. Malaysia is a tropical country. It rains a lot here in this South-East Asian nation. It is only “standard procedure” that we take extra precautions in anti-slip and anti-trip falls.

The slip, trip, and fall awareness are just that – bringing awareness to our staffs about the possible problems caused by wetness. We have to make sure that our staffs are careful when it comes to dampness and puddling at our office areas.

We have guided them on the possible ways to reduce or eliminate wetness at our workplace. That way our workplace safety is not compromised.

3. Wearing the correct and proper fitting PPE gears

This is by far self-explanatory. Working around hazardous chemicals and dangerous items can be life-threatening. PPE does not necessarily remove or completely protect you from the hazards and dangers. However, staffs are often advised to wear it to reduce any potential bodily harm.

At the same time, we’d also like to mention that it’s strongly advisable for staffs to wear fitting gears. Protective gears that are the right fitting size for you. No one size bigger or one size smaller. It has to be the correct size. PPE is not meant to make you feel too comfortable or look great. It’s meant to prevent and reduce any harm that comes your way.

4. Regular checkup and maintenance of company properties

Regular checkup and maintenance of company properties

Our HSE staffs regularly check our workplace property for any damages or problems at hand. They ensure that every item, every vehicle, every area is in proper and working conditions. Any damaged vehicles or areas in the office can lead to further deterioration. Further deterioration can lead to possible workplace safety compromise.

Nobody wants to work in an office or area that is surrounded by damages. That is why our HSE staffs are constantly keeping the workplace in check. Anything to keep our workplace safe from potential risks.

Workplace safety definitely means a lot to TKR Engineering. It is something that we do not take lightly. We hold workplace safety in high regards. At the same time, we have taken measures in order to ensure high levels of workplace safety.

4 Reasons Why You Need Boat Maintenance

Why Engineering Management Matters

TKR Engineering Values Workplace Safety

4 Reasons Why Engineering Management Matters

And why you need it

Engineering management covers a wide range of field. Although there is a wide range of different kinds of engineering types, engineering management is where engineering is mixed with management. We have previously talked about engineering management and its uses here.

This is basically what engineering management means:

Engineering management in simple, layman’s explanation means having both the aptitude of engineering skills and management skills. Engineering management basically means preparing the engineer with business acumen. Having a combination of business and management with real technical expertise can bring many benefits to engineering firms. Engineers with strong business management skills play a key role in preparing the next generation of managers in the engineering sector.

However, in a lot of engineering firms, it’s great to have a senior positioned engineer take charge of the firm under the boss. For such a senior engineer, it’s great to have effective management skills.

With that being said, let’s see how engineering management can benefit you.

Why You Need Engineering Management

Here are some reasons how your company can benefit from great engineering management.

1. Skills and insights that can provide better advantages for your company

And why you need engineering management - team work
Image via Canva

Engineering management needs a set of highly technical that comes with emotional intelligence and team management skills. You’ll also need to comprehend how to manage and run a project. Unlike most management roles, engineering managers are expected to the understanding of how to run an engineering business. In a competitive market, these skills are precious. Employers are often on the lookout for engineers who can do the work and will also have a strong grasp of what goes on behind the scenes in the engineering business.

Having a practical business outlook on top of your engineering skills means a lot of useful things. It can mean that you will be able to manage projects while keeping higher-level business needs in mind. This is a quality that many engineering employers look for in an engineering manager: the ability to do the work while meeting business targets.

At the same time, being an engineer manager also means that you are well-prepared for new market changes. Without a doubt, engineering markets are always updating. What’s important is how to weather the emotionally stressful side of the industry. Handle both emotional and workplace issues, you’ll be able to go far with your management skills.

2. Opportunity and Relationship Management

Engineering management can provide better advantages for your company
Image via Canva

Part of having great engineering management set up for excellence is figuring out the “right” opportunities and relationships. As soon as the relationships are in place, the opportunities will start to come in. Understanding which ones to tackle and which ones to give up on is more art than science. it comes with a combination of skillset, bandwidth, and alignment. You will certainly want to keep solving newer and more interesting problems. However, that implies a certain mastery of yesterday’s problems. And, even if all those ingredients are available, the relationship aspect still plays a big part.

You can understand that your engineering manager essentially work for your team and have done what’s needed to establish robust lines of communication. Then you will start focusing on relationships. You understand relationships – long-lived with ups and downs, brimming with potential that’s sometimes unfulfilled. Each individual on your team is in it for the long haul – think and plan accordingly. Going one step further, engineering managers will see that they start to behave as one unit that builds relationships with other teams. These can be users, customers, dependencies, partners, overlords, and whatnot. The success of your team is tied largely to intra-team and inter-team relationships.

3. Aiming for bigger and better goals against your competitors

Engineering management better goals against your competitors
Image via Canva

Working as a team and company developer is great. You get to be hands-on with the technology. At the same time, you get to solve difficult problems and then deliver them as part of the team. However, for some engineering managers, they may be really good at some parts of the technical role. Some others are more skilled and passionate about other parts.

Some engineering managers get more satisfaction from achieving a big goal as part of a team. Rather than achieving a smaller one as an individual. As an engineering manager, you can play a small role in towards the bigger goal. Add it all up, and you can see that engineering management made a big impact on the firm’s outcome.

As engineering managers, they are in an intense competition with other top companies for new engineering talent. Choosing a strong candidate takes strategy, execution, and sometimes a little bit of luck. Just like closing out a tennis match against a difficult opponent. If you are great (and you better be good at choosing), you will win more than you lose. When you lose, you need to be able to let it go and learn from your mistakes. You should then get ready for the next one.

What made it so satisfying in engineering management was that while your team may all be strong at execution, remember it’s all about tackling the real work to earn results. Engineering management people should be there to help, challenge, and encourage their teams along the way.

If you ever need engineering services, do not hesitate to contact us. We are willing to help you along the way. Our engineering team is managed by some of the best engineering managements around town. You will not be disappointed by our top-notch engineering management and services.

Boat Maintenance: 4 Reasons Why You Need It

Keeping Your Boat Well Maintained Is Important

Boat maintenance is a vital part of any boat upkeep. A lot of ships from any industry will need some form of boat maintenance. When companies say that they need boat maintenance, it usually means almost anything:

Boats need maintenance and upkeep for a myriad of reasons. Here are some reasons why you need it.

4 Reasons Why You Need Boat Upkeep

1. Avoid battery and engine problems

Boat maintenance - tkr engineering
Image via Canva

Battery and engine problems have been a prevalent issue in many boats. It can come from a series of pre-existing issues. Follow the simple steps below in keeping your boat well-maintained:

  • Always replace the engine’s reeling battery with another marine battery. Choose one that has thicker plates and a more robust design. Try not to choose an auto battery to withstand the strong vibration and pounding a boat can deliver.
  • Secure the marine battery with a good battery tray, which should at least have a base that is screwed or bolted to the boat. Or you can choose a rigid bracket or a locking strap to hold it to the base. You certainly do not want the battery smashing around in rough water.
  • Frequently check the battery terminal connections to ensure that they are snug and free of corrosion. If you use the boat less than frequently, then use a maintenance-type battery charger to keep the battery fully charged between trips.

2. Prevent fuel problems

tkr engineering ship maintenance
Image via Canva

Using the wrong fuel may destroy your boat and its engine. Here are some tips when it comes to fuel problems:

  • If possible, fuel your boat with gasoline that does not contain ethanol. If only ethanol-blend fuel is available, then make sure to only use fuel with up to 10% ethanol (E10). No marine engine is certified to operate on fuel with more than 10% ethanol. Try to by fresh gas from a busy fuel dock or gas station where you can.
  • Use a fuel stabilizer additive if you don’t forestall using most of the fuel in your boat within a couple of weeks. Modern gasoline can begin to oxidize and form problem-causing deposits in the fuel system in just a few weeks. This is especially true in older engines fitted with a carburetor rather than fuel injection.
  • Install a 10-micron water-separating fuel filter between the fuel tank and the engine. This can have a spin-off filter element. Many newer boats are already equipped with these filters. This can in turn keep water and very fine particles of debris out of the engine. Carry a spare filter element on the boat where you can.

3. Have a solid maintenance plan

tkr engineering - boat upkeep

It’s all in having a solid maintenance plan. Lack of a coherent plan makes it impossible for many marine operators to enjoy maximum satisfaction from their watercraft. Regardless of how prudent you are, a boat is an expensive transaction.

Buying one without having a plan on how to maintain and run it without spending so much money is a recipe for disaster. You will want to have as much information as you can get on the best boat for your budget range. Part of your investigation should include shopping for brands with a reputation for being trustworthy and easy to maintain.

There are boat brands that deliver optimal utility with light maintenance with OEM and off-the-market spares. Don’t buy a boat without thinking properly about the maintenance and other related costs. It’s the best way to avoid any costly mistakes.

4. Price as an indicator for long-term maintenance

tkr engineering ship upkeep

Remember that selling a boat a few years after buying may end in a loss. Buy a boat you can own for at least 10 years so you can get the maximum value. The price of a boat usually gives a clue about the cost of maintaining it. If you wish to save money on maintenance, get a boat you or your company can afford. That way, it becomes easier to pay for any expenses that come your way.

The higher the price of a boat, the more expensive its parts and maintenance costs. It’s like owning a Porsche versus a Toyota Corolla car. The premium price of the former means every product and service attached to its maintenance will command high prices to reflect the vehicle class.

So, before you sign that contract to finance that boat, think about the accessibility of spare parts. Also, think about the technical knowhow. If you are going for the best boat on the market, make sure to budget for top dollar maintenance.

Remember that boat maintenance is as important. We are very sure that you do not wish to pay for an expensive boat upkeep long term. Therefore, remember to do really good research before committing. After all, you do not wish to get your hands on a lemon boat either!

Why Design Process is Vital for Engineering Sectors

Engineering Management: Read All About It

Design Process in Engineering Sectors

Things That Engineers Do To Design Plans

Before an engineer goes on to execute his plan, he goes through the design process. The design process is an important procedure before they start constructing the building or structure. This extends into every area of engineering types.

You will commonly find that design process is present in every engineering types. The design process is to kickstart the entire engineering project, in simple understanding.

Here are some steps that an engineer will take in design processes.

Step 1 – Ask and Identify the Needs and Constraints

Engineers usually ask critical questions about what they want to create in this stage. Whether the design is intended for a skyscraper, amusement park ride, bicycle or even a smartphone. These questions should include: What is the problem at hand to solve? What do they want to design? Who is intended it for? What do they wish to accomplish? Or what are the project requirements? What are the limitations? And what is their goal?

Step 2 – Research the Problem

This includes talking to people from many different specialising backgrounds to help with researching what products or solutions already exist. Or what technologies may be adaptable to their clients’ needs.

Step 3 – Imagine and Develop Possible Solutions

Engineers will work together in a team to brainstorm ideas and develop as many solutions as possible. This is the time where engineers are encouraged wild ideas and defer judgment. They can build on the ideas of others, focus on a topic. They may also have one conversation at a time! Always remember though, good design is all about the engineers’ teamwork!

Step 4 – Choose a Promising Solution

For many engineering teams in the design process, this is the hardest step! They have to revisit the needs, constraints and research from the earlier steps. At times, they also have to compare their best ideas, and so on. They may have to choose and settle on one solution. Then make a plan to move forward with it.

Step 5 – Create and Build a Prototype

Science Buddies - Design Process Engineering - TKR ENGINEERING
Image via Science Buddies

Constructing a prototype makes your ideas real. The early versions of the design solution help the engineer and his team verify whether the design meets the original challenge objectives. Engineers often push themselves for creativity, imagination and excellence in design.

Step 6 – Test and Evaluate The Prototypes

Does the prototype function? Does it help solve the need? Engineers often communicate the results and receive feedback. This is where engineers analyse and discuss what works in the design process, what doesn’t and what can be improved.

Step 7 – Improve and Redesign as Needed

Engineers discuss and access how they can improve their solutions. They can make revisions and draw new designs. They can iterate their design to make their product the best it can be. Then rinse and repeat the steps.

The design process is basically what engineers need to get their projects kickstarted. It’s where it all starts. It’s an important step, and it’s essential to their job.

  • Air Titan Series (Pneumatic Injection Pump)
  • Neptune Series (Motor-Driven Metering Pump)
  • Tornado Series (Air Operated Diaphragm Pump)

EVOL Technology designs and manufactures three different series of customizable high-quality pumps applicable for many applications used in the oil and gas sector, petrochemical industry, and other related industries. Recognizing our customer’s needs for convenience and product performance, we concentrate on promoting solutions that are quality assured yet cost-effective to solve your problems.

Pump Safety

If you work around pipelines you will know that it requires pumps to function (to an extent). And like every other technology out there, it needs maintenance and repair works from time to time.

It’s very easy to overlook common maintenance works. It’s just as easy to rationalize the fact that it’s not worth the time to regularly inspect and replace faulty parts. Pretty easy to overlook a lot of things when everything is running smoothly, isn’t it?

However, nothing can be further from the truth. The genuineness is that the majority of facilities have several pumps performing a variety of functions that are essential to the successful operation of the plant. If any of the pumps breaks or malfunctions, it can cause the entire plant to shut down.

Pumps are like car engines. They are the cogs in the wheel that keeps your facilities functioning resourcefully. Whether if you choose to use them for manufacturing purposes, HVAC, water treatment, among other industrial uses. If you wish to keep pumps running properly, then you should implement and follow a regular maintenance schedule.

Pump Repair Maintenance: Getting Started

There is, without a doubt, importance in pump repair for your facilities’ overall upkeep. As mentioned before – pumps are like car engines. They are part and parcel to keeping your facilities up and running.

Here are some pump repair and maintenance tasks you should keep track of as a company:

Maintenance Frequency

It’s good to know your system and make it a point to observe your pumpsObserve it while they are in the works – live! Take note of any leaks, unusual sounds, odd vibrations, or funny smells.

Safety First

Ensure that machines are shut down before you do your maintenance. Do it even when you are doing your systems check. Proper isolation is crucial not only for electrical systems but also for hydraulic systems too.

Mechanical Inspection

Here are some things you may need to inspect:

  • Check for secure mounting points
  • Look out for faulty mechanical seal and packing
  • Check for leakages on pump flanges
  • Inspect the couplings
  • Do overall inspection and clean the filters frequently

When it comes to lubricating the motor and pump bearing, follow the manufacturers’ guidelines. Make sure that you don’t over lubricate. If you over-lubricate, you may cause damage to the pumps as a result instead of under-greasing it.

If the bearing has a vent cap, take away the cap and run the pump for 30 minutes. Then re-install cap. This lets the access grease to work its way out of the bearing.

Electrical and Motor Inspection

When it comes to lubricating the motor and pump bearing, follow the manufacturers’ guidelines. Make sure that you don’t over lubricate. If you over-lubricate, you may cause damage to the pumps as a result instead of under-greasing it.

If the bearing has a vent cap, take away the cap and run the pump for 30 minutes. Then re-install cap. This lets the access grease to work its way out of the bearing.

Step 1: Check and make sure that all terminations are tight.

Step 2: Then inspect the motor vents and windings for dust/dirt build-ups. Clean accordingly as per manufacturer’s guidelines.

Step 3: Inspect the starter or contractor for any arcing, overheating, etc.

Step 4: Use a megohmmeter on the windings to check for any insulation failure

Replace Any Damaged Seals

If any seals or O-rings show damages, please replace it immediately. By using a temporary rubber assembly lubricant, it will ensure a skin-tight fit and prevent any leaks or slips.

Most times people will advise and advocate to get a professional pump specialist to do the pump repairs. However, there are check-ups that you can do yourself to make sure that your pump continues to function in efficiency and reduce the risk of failure.

Submersed pumps are harder for you to assess its condition, as the pump sits below waterlines and out of human sight. In these systems, you can search for any signs of damages to the system. Pay attention to any alarms that your system is sounding. Calling a specialist when you notice damage or warning buzzers can allow you to have your own system repaired before total failure.

If your pump is visible above ground, then you are able to see the warning signs of failing components. Seeing any liquids leaking from the casing and from joints are an indication that the seals have failed.

You may not always be able to see water leaking directly from the pump. However, seeing damp patches, mould, smelling stale water or sewage are important signs that your pump isn’t sealed properly.

If you witness or notice any of the above-mentioned things, call a pump company as soon as possible. Arrange for an inspection and repair service.

Key Takeaway for Pump Solutions

Remember to look at all the conditions of your system and address the consistent operational requirements of preventive maintenance. At the same time, also look for signs of possible future problems to avoid reaching a point of pump system failure. This may be due to pre-existing conditions:

  • Unusual sign of wear
  • Heat generation
  • Lubrication usage
  • Vibrations
  • Pressure
  • Speed
  • Noise
  • Flow
  • Strain
  • Leakage
  • Fugitive emissions
  • Power consumptions

Keeping pumps running successfully in the long run of time needs proper pump design selection, proper installation, careful operation, and the ability to observe changes in performance over time.

Furthermore, if there ever is a failure in the future, the bulk of the investigation of the failure’s cause will be great. Do make sure to take relevant measures to prevent the problem from happening again.

Make sure that your pumps are in good condition so you can avoid frequent pump repair and service. To ensure that you don’t have to experience catastrophic failure in the future, make sure that your pumps are:

  • Properly sized
  • Dynamically balanced
  • Sits on stable foundations with good shaft alignment
  • Proper lubrication
  • Operators to start, run, and stop the pump with care
  • Maintenance crew to observe for unhealthy trends

Before organizations start on their construction, they’d clear their lands for soil treatment. Some area of lands used to be home to pests. Sometimes the lands cleared for new buildings used to be rubber tree or palm oil plantation. It may have previously been infested by termites and other pests.

In order to prevent the land from further infestation, construction companies will need to disinfect and decontaminate the area.

Signs of Pest Infestations

Here are some signs of possible infestation at your perimeters. Check for these signs yourself, or you may find one of our representatives to determine it for you.

Mub tubes – “roads” and “hives’ made by termites that have infested your perimeter.

Termite Swarmers – Not necessarily limited to termites, as it can also include other types of flying insects – ants for example. They may not survive enough in numbers to form a new colony, as most will die after a short amount of time (usually a few hours). However, it may re-occur again sometime in the future.

Wood Damage – This is a very obvious sign of termite infestation. You can see your wooden items (tables, cabinet, wardrobes, etc.) get eaten by termite. It can be rendered useless in the future.

Termite Frass – This is the wood remnant taken by the termites. They will usually use it to create mub tubes, termite colonies, and similar colonial homes.

Termite mounts – you can commonly find these in your gardens. However, you can also find them within enclosed compounds and other well-drained areas. The mounds are usually made of dirt and other natural elements.

Live Termites – they tend to boldly appear wherever they are not wanted. You can spot their presence by seeing small new holes in walls, discoloured or drooping drywall, buckling of wooden or laminated floors, and so on.

Common Types of Engineering You Can Find

A Quick Guide of the Kinds of Engineering Services We Provide

There are a huge variety of engineering you can find. Different types of engineering usually provide different kinds of services in different sectors. In all its essence, engineering basically means:

Engineering is the application of science and math to solve problems. Engineers figure out how things work and find practical uses for scientific discoveries. Scientists and inventors often get the credit for innovations that advance the human condition, but it is engineers who are instrumental in making those innovations available to the world.

Source: Live Science

We live on a planet that is filled with different kinds of engineering. It’s pretty telling as buildings require civil engineering. Boats and marine vessels require some form of mechanical engineering and marine engineering. Cars require mechanical engineering as much as roads require civil engineering. The things we use on a daily basis require some form of engineering.

Here are some of the most common engineering types you can find:

  • Mechanical engineering
  • Electrical engineering
  • Civil engineering
  • Chemical engineering
  • Industrial engineering
  • Marine engineering

There are many more kinds of engineering that you can find. Each engineering serves their respective fields accordingly. Some engineering types are needed more than the others. Whereas some others do not.

Common Types of Engineering

TKR Types of Engineering

Let’s have a look at some of the most common, if not more popular kinds of engineering.

Civil Engineering

Civil engineering is perhaps the most popular and common engineering types you can ever find.

TKR Engineering is one of the engineering firms in Miri that provides civil engineering services. Civil engineering is definitely one of the most common engineering services you can find. Many industries need civil engineering for various reasons.

You can find industries that commonly need civil engineers and their services. Especially in the oil and gas sector, construction sector, and many more. It’s one of the most sought-after engineering categories across many industries.

However, keep in mind that the supply and demand of each engineering categories differ from country to country. It also depends on the supply and demand internationally, regionally, and locally. That means, sometimes there may be a spike in needing a civil engineer. Some other time, the country or region may not need any civil engineers at all.

What Do Civil Engineers Usually Do?

Civil engineering is not all about fancy buildings. Although it’s true that civil engineers are responsible for some of the most jaw-dropping infrastructures in the world. Infrastructures such as the Sydney Opera House, The Shard, among other famous landmarks.

However, civil engineering is also about maintaining and adapting the infrastructure that we use on a daily basis – our roads, railways and bridges; energy and water supply; waste networks and flood defences. Civil engineers have to maintain those infrastructures running effectively and adapt it to meet challenges, such as population growth, climate change and natural disasters.

They must also find creative ways to deliver the infrastructure as needed when there is little money in the bank to pay for it. In simple words, civil engineers have to come up with solid solutions to complex problems and implement them accordingly. They literally shape the planet we live in. There are many different specializations within civil engineering, including environmental, structural, municipal, transport and geotechnical.

There are two kinds of civil engineering within the various specialisms:

  • Civil engineering consultants who emphasise on design work and generally spend more time in the office or working with their clients.
  • Civil engineer contractors who are more involved with keeping an eye on the physical construction and are usually based on-site.

Both are challenging environments, and all civil engineers are needed to be innovative and logical individuals. Other indispensable attributes civil engineers need include: creativity, versatility, a problem-solving mind, and the ability to understand the bigger picture and to cooperate with a number of other professionals.

Characteristics of Civil Engineering

Civil engineers need a broad skill set. One of the most critical rudiments to succeeding is project management. Some plans can be drawn in relative remoteness; however, it is bringing plans to life that needs a team. A civil engineer is the leader of such a team. Where team members’ individual work encounters with that of others, the civil engineer makes sure it all fits together.

All the skills that have to be taken to any project have to be applied to public works projects. Civil engineers hold others accountable while making sure that a public works project is completed on time, on budget and up to quality expectations.

Civil engineers are supposed to be great problem solvers. When documented plans do not go hand in hand with reality, civil engineers will then devise solutions that keep within a project’s framework. They answer questions about the ongoing project when those performing parts of the project need clarification.

Skills That Civil Engineers Need

The ability of advanced mathematics is essential to civil engineering. Geometry and calculus are clear necessities. For obvious reasons, computer programs can solve equations in a matter of a few seconds. However, civil engineers must know what those figures entail and apply them to plans. Laymen and regular people outside the core group working on a public works project do not understand these mathematical areas to the extent any civil engineers do. However, those who make conclusions about a public works project’s direction understand business math.

Civil engineers offer cost estimates and devise budgets. They need acceptance from decision-makers on the finance side of things. This is so that they can actually put their geometry and calculus skills to creative use.

Engineering projects often have many governmental units involved. Work on an interstate highway can involve entities in federal, state and local governments. On some projects, there can be more than one government organization that provides financial support.

Designated officials and public administrators pay more attention to projects they support financially than to those merely occurring in their geographical proximity. For example, a city council is aware of road projects going on in the county, however, they are involved in road projects within the city limits.

Mechanical Engineering

One of the most miscellaneous and versatile engineering fields, mechanical engineering is the study of objects and systems in motion. That being said, the field of mechanical engineering touches virtually on every aspect of modern life, including the human body.

The role of a mechanical engineer is to take a product from an idea to the market. To achieve this, the mechanical engineer must be able to determine the forces and thermal environment that the product, its parts, or its sub-systems will experience. They are to design them for functionality, aesthetics, and durability. Mechanical engineers also have to determine the best manufacturing approach that will ensure operation without catastrophe.

Mechanical engineers play important roles in a wide range of industries including the following:

  • Automotive
  • Aerospace
  • Biotechnology
  • Computers
  • Electronics
  • Microelectromechanical systems
  • Energy conversion
  • Robotics and automation
  • Manufacturing

The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) currently lists up to 36 different technical divisions, from advanced energy systems and aerospace engineering to solid-waste engineering and textile engineering.

The breadth of mechanical engineering chastisement allows students a variety of career choices beyond the industries listed above. Regardless of the precise path, they envisage for themselves, a mechanical engineering education authorizes students with creative thinking skills to design an exciting product or system. They have analytical tools to attain their design goals. They also have the ability to overcome all restrictions. At the same time, they also have the teamwork needed to design, market, and yield a system. These valuable skills can be used to launch careers in many other fields, such as medicine, law, consulting, management, banking, and finance.

What Exactly is Mechanical Engineering?

Technically, mechanical engineering is the application of the principles and problem-solving techniques from design to manufacturing to the marketplace for any object. Mechanical engineers assess their work using the principles of motion, energy, and force, making sure that designs function safely, efficiently, and reliably, all at a competitive cost.

Mechanical engineers do make a difference. That’s because of mechanical engineering careers centre around creating technologies to meet your everyday human needs. Virtually every product or service in modern society has probably been touched in some way by a mechanical engineer to help us. This includes solving today’s problems and creating future resolutions in health care, energy, transportation, space exploration, climate change, and more.

Being deep-seated in many challenges and innovations across many fields means a mechanical engineering education is versatile. To meet this broad request, mechanical engineers may design a module, a machine, a system, or a process. This ranges from the macro to the micro, from the largest systems like cars and satellites to the smallest components like sensors and switches. Anything that requires to be manufactured – anything with moving parts – needs the knowledge of a mechanical engineer.

What Do They Do?

Mechanical engineering syndicates creativity, knowledge and analytical tools to complete the difficult task in shaping an idea into realism. This alteration happens at a personal scale, affecting human lives on a level we can reach out and touch like robotic prosthetic devices. It happens on a resident scale, affecting people in community-level spaces, like with nimble unified microgrids. And it happens on much larger scales, like with advanced power systems, through engineering that operates nationwide or across the planet.

Mechanical engineers have a massive range of opportunity and their education reflects this breadth of subjects. Students concentrate on one area while consolidating analytical and problem-solving skills applicable to any engineering situation.

Disciplines within mechanical engineering include the following:

  • Acoustics
  • Aerospace
  • Automation
  • Automotive
  • Autonomous Systems
  • Biotechnology
  • Composites
  • Computer-Aided Design (CAD)
  • Control Systems
  • Cybersecurity
  • Design
  • Energy
  • Ergonomics
  • Human health
  • Manufacturing and additive manufacturing
  • Mechanics
  • Nanotechnology
  • Production planning
  • Robotics
  • Structural analysis

Technology itself has also shaped how mechanical engineers’ function and the suite of tools have grown quite powerful in recent years. Computer-aided engineering (CAE) is a broad term that covers anything from typical CAD methods to computer-aided manufacturing to computer-aided engineering, involving limited element analysis (FEA) and computational fluid dynamics (CFD). These tools and others have additionally broadened the horizons of mechanical engineering.

A Career in Mechanical Engineering

lifting equipment suppliesSociety pretty much depends on mechanical engineering. The need for this knowledge is great in so many fields and there is no real limit for the freshly graduated mechanical engineer. Jobs are often in demand, particularly in the automotive, aerospace, electronics, biotechnology, and energy businesses.

In statics, research focuses on how forces are spread to and throughout a structure. As soon a system is in motion, mechanical engineers look at subtleties, or what speeds, accelerations and resulting forces come into play. Kinematics then scrutinizes how a mechanism behaves as it moves through its range of movement.

Resources science delves into defining the best materials for different usages. A part of that is its strength, which is indispensable for many construction, automobile, and medical materials.

How energy gets transformed into useful power is the heart of thermodynamics, as well as determining what energy is lost in the procedure. One specific kind of energy, heat transfer, is crucial in many usages and need gathering and analysing temperature data and deliveries. Fluid mechanics, which also has a diversity of applications, look at many properties including pressure reduction from fluid flow and aerodynamic drag forces.

Manufacturing is an imperative step in mechanical engineering. Within the field, researchers examine the best processes to make manufacturing more effectual. Laboratory methods focus on refining how to measure both thermal and mechanical engineering products and processes. At the same time, machine design grows equipment-scale processes while electrical engineering focuses on circuitry. All this equipment provides vibrations, another field of mechanical engineering, in which researchers find out how to predict and control vibrations.

Engineering economics makes mechanical designs pertinent and usable in the real world by guesstimating manufacturing and life cycle costs of materials, designs, and other engineered products.

Skills Needed for Mechanical Engineering

The core of engineering is problem-solving. With this at its core, mechanical engineering also needs applied creativity – a hands-on understanding of the work involved. All that along with strong interpersonal skills like networking, leadership, and conflict organization. Creating a product is only part of the calculation; knowing how to work with people, ideas, data, and economics completely make a mechanical engineer.

Key Takeaway for Mechanical Engineering

Breakthroughs in materials and analytical tools have made way for new frontiers for mechanical engineers. Nanotechnology, biotechnology, amalgams, computational fluid dynamics (CFD), and acoustic engineering have all extended the mechanical engineering toolbox.

Nanotechnology allows for the engineering of materials on the tiniest of scales. With the ability to design and manufacture down to the rudimentary level, the likelihoods for objects grows immensely. Composites are another area where the operation of materials allows for new manufacturing opportunities. By uniting materials with different characteristics in ground-breaking ways, the best of each material can be employed and new answers found for different types of engineering.

CFD provides mechanical engineers with the opportunity to study multifaceted fluid flows analysed with procedures. This allows for the modelling of circumstances that would previously have been impossible. Acoustical engineering inspects vibration and sound, providing the opportunity to decrease noise in devices and increase competence in everything from biotechnology to architecture.

Marine Engineering

Marine engineering is perhaps one of the less-talked-about engineering categories. However, that does not mean it does not exist as types of engineering. A lot of people may think that marine engineering isn’t as important or common as some other engineering categories. Well, they are obviously wrong when it comes to different types of engineering!

Marine engineering has played many vital and substantial roles across many sectors. We are here to enlighten you on what marine engineering is, and what it is for. Read on to find out what it is.

Why You Need Marine Engineers

Marine engineers are people who make and repair boats, underwater crafts, offshore platforms, and drilling equipment. They also design, build, and test ships, boats, and other marine entities.

At the same time, it is normal for them to work closely with naval architects to design small yachts, fishing boats, submarines, and aircraft carriers.

They may sometimes even have to work closely with ocean engineers. In quick summary, marine engineering is a lot like ocean engineering, but with a mix of other engineering types. It is a combination of classical engineering types like civil engineering, mechanical engineering, and electrical engineering. What separates marine engineers is their ability to solve complicated problems. These include hydrodynamics, marine acoustics, offshore engineering, marine robotics and naval architecture.

Common Skills Used By Marine Engineers

Marine engineers are expected to know and learn a wide range of skills to stay relevant in the market. Here are some of the core skills your typical marine engineer should have:

  • Science
  • Physics
  • Chemistry
  • Math
  • IT skills (so they can use AutoCAD design software)
  • Soft skills that are good for marine engineers to have to stay in their field:
  • Problem-solving
  • Communication
  • Time management
  • Leadership

Where Do Marine Engineers Usually Work At?

Marine Engineers stereotypically work offshore – oilrigs and ships mostly. That stereotype may be true, but it doesn’t mean that there are no offshore jobs for them. Here are some common marine engineering jobs you can find:

  • Merchant vessels
  • Navy vessels where you are able to combine your naval career with your technical experiences
  • Shipping equipment manufacturers
  • Oil industries

People generally can understand that not everyone wants to work offshore. To some people, going offshore is a complete put off to them. That being said, here are some onshore jobs that marine engineers can work at:

  • Hotels that have sea vessels in their services
  • Government organizations
  • Shipping companies
  • Training other marine engineers
  • Marine engineering firms
  • Boatbuilders

Key Takeaway For Marine Engineering

Marine engineering is an important aspect of engineering. It may not be the most popular aspect but still is important nonetheless. Its salary is relatively high, albeit not as high as what some other types of engineering.

The demand for marine engineering isn’t exactly as popular or high. Compared to civil engineering and mechanical engineering, marine engineering is moderate in demands. However, you will need to assess the market for marine engineering too. Like every market demand for professionals, not every country will need marine engineers. You will need to see for yourself if your country has a need for marine engineers.

The bottom line is that there are so many kinds of engineering you can find. Each has varying degrees of importance and usefulness to our society. The key takeaway is that civil engineering and mechanical engineering are some of the most common types of engineering. You can commonly find them in many sectors across many sectors.
