  • Help people deal with heatwaves from hormone changes
  • Chemotherapy
  • Other certain medical conditions

Doctors and other similar medical personnel often put frozen packs in their pockets, chest areas, or under their straps. Other cooling strategies may include products disguised as necklaces with huge cooling beads in the form of a long wrap. The reusable beads are gel packs that can be chilled again and again. Some headbands and neck wraps use evaporative technology to keep the wearer cool.

People may say that only medical personnel use it. However, they are mistaken. There are also offshore people, labourers, and similar people using this. It does not just limit to medical personnel. These can be used by anyone who wears PPE too.

Some people working in the medical field find a dab of peppermint oil on the back of the neck creates a cooling sensation. Thermoreceptors in the skin are able to sense a cooling sensation created by the menthol in peppermint. Topical usage of peppermint oil generates a long-lasting cooling effect on the wearer’s skin.

Body powders, where it is made to absorb moisture, can help maintain a dry feeling on your skin. This is especially accommodating in areas where clothing can cause skin chaffing. Basic corn-starch-based powders are the most popular. Some powders come with additional ingredients such as powdered slippery elm, ground cocoa butter, kaolin clay, arrowroot rice powder, tapioca starch or baking soda.

Some products are also labelled as vegan. There are also powder products that come with calamine to reduce skin friction.  Some powders contain antifungal ingredients to reduce the problem of a fungal dermatitis outbreak.

Medical personnel are also adopting two other strategies to tackle excessive perspiration. Natural mineral ammonium salt sticks have been used for many years as a natural deodorant that has antimicrobial and astringent properties. After washing, the hard stone is rubbed across your wet skin surface, then dry. While it is not specifically formulated for cooling, some use FiteBac. FiteBac is a silicone-based hand sanitiser to create a smooth-feeling skin surface that fights chaffing. Since skin pathogens thrive in warm, moist environments, FiteBac’s exclusive antimicrobial properties help kill microbes for up to four hours.

While scientists have refuted the idea that we lose more heat from our head, most of us have never covered our hair for work purposes. Currently, there is one more reason that we feel hot. Scrub caps or bouffant hair coverings come in all kinds of fabrics. Some people find a larger size improves heat dissipation. While others are donning damp caps, taking benefit of the cooling effect as the moisture evaporates. Some medical personnel wet their hair before putting on a cap and allow Mother Nature to help them stay cool.


The bottom line is that there are so many ways of keeping yourself cool when wearing PPE. Above are some of the common types of cooling PPE you can currently find available from suppliers. Fire breakouts are some of the most common workplace risks. For that very reason, we ensure that our staffs are trained and updated periodically on what to do. Just in case a fire breaks out, our staffs are trained on how to use the fire extinguisher and the fire hose.

Training and practices are done regularly on a monthly basis. Selected staffs are asked to attend for an updated practice.

While training for it, our staffs are also educated on the different kinds of “fire hazards”. They were educated on a variety of fire-related hazards while at it. At the same time, they are also taught what kinds of anti-inflammatory items to use. We made sure that just in case a fire breaks out, our staffs are well-prepared for it.

2. Slip, trip, and fall awareness

The slip, trip, and fall awareness occasion are to guide and train our staffs about the “dangers” of slipperiness. Malaysia is a tropical country. It rains a lot here in this South-East Asian nation. It is only “standard procedure” that we take extra precautions in anti-slip and anti-trip falls.

The slip, trip, and fall awareness are just that – bringing awareness to our staffs about the possible problems caused by wetness. We have to make sure that our staffs are careful when it comes to dampness and puddling at our office areas.

This is by far self-explanatory. Working around hazardous chemicals and dangerous items can be life-threatening. PPE does not necessarily remove or completely protect you from the hazards and dangers. However, staffs are often advised to wear it to reduce any potential bodily harm.

At the same time, we’d also like to mention that it’s strongly advisable for staffs to wear fitting gears. Protective gears that are the right fitting size for you. No one size bigger or one size smaller. It has to be the correct size. PPE is not meant to make you feel too comfortable or look great. It’s meant to prevent and reduce any harm that comes your way.

If you work around pipelines you will know that it requires pumps to function (to an extent). And like every other technology out there, it needs maintenance and repair works from time to time.

Pump Repair Maintenance: Getting Started

There is, without a doubt, importance in pump repair for your facilities’ overall upkeep. As mentioned before – pumps are like car engines. They are part and parcel to keeping your facilities up and running.

Here are some pump repair and maintenance tasks you should keep track of as a company:

Maintenance Frequency

It’s good to know your system and make it a point to observe your pumpsObserve it while they are in the works – live! Take note of any leaks, unusual sounds, odd vibrations, or funny smells.

Safety First

Ensure that machines are shut down before you do your maintenance. Do it even when you are doing your systems check. Proper isolation is crucial not only for electrical systems but also for hydraulic systems too.

Mechanical Inspection

Here are some things you may need to inspect:

  • Check for secure mounting points
  • Look out for faulty mechanical seal and packing
  • Check for leakages on pump flanges
  • Inspect the couplings
  • Do overall inspection and clean the filters frequently


When it comes to lubricating the motor and pump bearing, follow the manufacturers’ guidelines. Make sure that you don’t over lubricate. If you over-lubricate, you may cause damage to the pumps as a result instead of under-greasing it.

If the bearing has a vent cap, take away the cap and run the pump for 30 minutes. Then re-install cap. This lets the access grease to work its way out of the bearing.

Electrical and Motor Inspection

When it comes to lubricating the motor and pump bearing, follow the manufacturers’ guidelines. Make sure that you don’t over lubricate. If you over-lubricate, you may cause damage to the pumps as a result instead of under-greasing it.

If the bearing has a vent cap, take away the cap and run the pump for 30 minutes. Then re-install cap. This lets the access grease to work its way out of the bearing.

Step 1: Check and make sure that all terminations are tight.

Step 2: Then inspect the motor vents and windings for dust/dirt build-ups. Clean accordingly as per manufacturer’s guidelines.

Step 3: Inspect the starter or contractor for any arcing, overheating, etc.

Step 4: Use a megohmmeter on the windings to check for any insulation failure

Replace Any Damaged Seals

If any seals or O-rings show damages, please replace it immediately. By using a temporary rubber assembly lubricant, it will ensure a skin-tight fit and prevent any leaks or slips.

Pump Repair and Maintenance: When To Replace It?

Most times people will advise and advocate to get a professional pump specialist to do the pump repairs. However, there are check-ups that you can do yourself to make sure that your pump continues to function in efficiency and reduce the risk of failure.

Submersed pumps are harder for you to assess its condition, as the pump sits below waterlines and out of human sight. In these systems, you can search for any signs of damages to the system. Pay attention to any alarms that your system is sounding. Calling a specialist when you notice damage or warning buzzers can allow you to have your own system repaired before total failure.

If your pump is visible above ground, then you are able to see the warning signs of failing components. Seeing any liquids leaking from the casing and from joints are an indication that the seals have failed.

You may not always be able to see water leaking directly from the pump. However, seeing damp patches, mould, smelling stale water or sewage are important signs that your pump isn’t sealed properly.

If you witness or notice any of the above-mentioned things, call a pump company as soon as possible. Arrange for an inspection and repair service.

.Marine and offshore safety are perhaps one of those areas that aren’t talked about a lot. Perhaps it’s one of those “less glam” parts of the industry. But it’s needed nonetheless. We are here to talk about safety in marine and offshore rigs.

Last year 2nd September 2019, a 75 feet long diving vessel Conception anchored in Platts harbour, Santa Cruz Island. On it was 33 passengers and 6 crew members. The boat caught fire in the early hours of the morning. All passengers and 1 crewmember died of smoke inhalation after being trapped in the berthing area.

Somehow the smoke and heat detectors are not interconnected on the boat. Not especially across all its passenger areas.

“The Conception may have passed all Coast Guard inspections, but that did not make it safe,” said NTSB Chairman Robert L. Sumwalt, whose team investigated the burned boat. “Our new recommendations will make these vessels safer, but there is no rule change that can replace human vigilance.”

The NTSB has later on called for all vessels similar to the Conception with overnight accommodations to be required to have interconnected smoke detectors installed in all passenger areas. It also recommended that a secondary means of escape lead into a different space than the primary exit, just in case a single fire blocks both escape paths. The NTSB also called on the U.S. Coast Guard to come up with and implement an inspection program to verify that roving patrols are conducted – as needed – for the safety of sleeping passengers and crew.

Call For Better Offshore Safety Efforts

NTSB investigators found the non-appearance of a required roving patrol on the Conception that has most likely delayed the initial detection of the fire. This further allowed for its growth, precluded firefighting and evacuation efforts. It also directly led to the high number of fatalities in the accident.

Having said all that, it simply means that safety precautions have to be taken on your boats, ships, offshore rigs, etc. It does not limit to just one entity, but a few. At the same time, even though the above incident happens at a private boat does not mean it will not happen on industrial ones.

Role of International Marine Contractors Association (IMCA)

The International Marine Contractors Association (IMCA), based in London, has published Basic Safety Training Requirements for Personnel Employed in the Offshore Renewable Energy Sector.

It provides standard basic safety training requirements for enclosure at contract awards stage. It covers those who are employed on-board vessels during the construction and maintenance support phases of offshore renewable energy projects. The new guidance document includes a vital matrix to aid precision and concise information for the sector.

The ‘Basic Safety Training Matrix’ outlines the minimum level of health and safety training, and medical fitness that is needed to work on (and from) vessels engaged on an offshore renewable energy project. It was designed by a working group of IMCA’s Marine Renewable Energy Committee chaired by Marc van Dorth from Seaway 7. The group also comprised of members from IMCA’s Diving, Marine, ROV and Offshore Survey Committees and the document is published as an IMCA Competence & Training Guideline.

Need For Standardised Basic Level of Safety Training

Captain Andy Goldsmith, Technical Adviser – Marine at IMCA explained, “All workers and mariners require a basic level of training prior to the commencement of work in the offshore renewable energy industry. The new document is designed to eliminate confusion and duplication of basic training. It can be costly in terms of both time and financial investment. It also affects the morale of marine contractor personnel.”

He further states, “The matrix, which was finalised in consultation with major developers such as Ørsted and Vattenfall greatly aids clarity for the sector. It ensures that clearly defined safety measures can be put in place right at the start of every offshore renewable energy project. This is by showing the basic safety training requirements depending on where an offshore worker is located.

“The working patterns and environment for personnel employed in a vessel are significantly different from personnel deployed directly from onshore to an offshore structure. Therefore, basic safety training requirements cannot be generalised and are different for both groups of personnel.”

IMCA stresses that the basic safety training is only one component of an individual’s competency requirement. The matrix does not detail training needed by individuals to be competent in the role for which they have been employed.

Ways You Can Prevent Offshore Hazards

Here are some ways that you can help prevent offshore hazards at oil rigs and/or boats (industrial or private, otherwise). Even though you may not be a professionally trained safety officer, you can still follow these few safety simple steps.

a. Actively peruse PPE that is provided

If your job is a high-risk job, and it requires PPE, then you should be using your PPE were provided (by your company). If your company does not provide the right PPE sets, then do so by pressuring your company in providing the right ones. Anything for keeping your safety at your work stations in regular check.

b. Follow workplace safety operation procedure (SOP)
